Pros:
Obviously, the lightweight design makes it very easy to carry this vacuum cleaner around and up/down the stairs. The brush speed control is within fingertips reach and allows for low or high brush speeds. The cleaning head is designed to keep dirt trapped and sucked into the bag. These two features make it great for hard floors and delicate rugs.
The Oreck XL Ultra not only takes up less room in closets, but lays down flat for storage under beds and other furniture.
Cons:
Reviewers at Amazon.com generally complain about cleaning power on pile and berber carpets. As with other vacuums, many have done their own tests by using the Oreck first, and following up with another vacuum or carpet cleaner only to find that the Oreck leaves a significant amount of dirt behind. There are also complaints the brushes may not work as well as Oreck claims; citing the lack of a groomed appearance.
As I’ve always suspected, some of the parts (like the handle) are cheaply made and easily break. You may need a new roll of duct tape for this vacuum. Reviews on Epinions are mixed but most agree with others: The Oreck XL is very lightweight and portable, works great on hard floors, rugs, and short pile carpets but not on thicker piles, parts are cheaply made and prone to breakage.
Conclusion:
The Oreck XL Ultra vacuum may not be for everyone, but it has it’s place. Elderly persons, petite women, those with back problems, etc. would benefit most. Also, those with large areas of hard floors, and little in the way of thick pile carpets may find this vacuum cleaner to be perfect for them.
